Tuesday January 1, 2008

I feel like we've flown along for the past month in a flurry of holidays, birthdays, and parties. The times have moved fast and things have happened under the radar of which we can only barely comprehend the motives and roots. As Americans, we've been focussing on Iraq and Iran, yet Afghanistan and Pakistan may have really demanded more consideration. There are many hot spots in the world these days.
The death of Benazir Bhutto was sad for me but not completely unexpected. This bright, popular woman has/had an amazing birth chart - Sun in Gemini, Moon in Libra, Capricorn Ascendant - which had many markers for strength and leadership ability. I always felt hopeful for a primarily Muslim country to love it's feminine prime minister on such a great scale. Hope has taken a giant step back, in place and in time.
On a very general level, there were many indicators of change and challenges during 2007. I'm referring to major planet aspects, which occur when one outer planet is either conjunct (0 degrees), opposite (180 degrees), square (90 degrees), trine (120 degrees), or sextile (60 degrees) to another one. We started last year with Jupiter square Uranus, with Saturn opposite Neptune, Jupiter trine Saturn, Saturn trine Pluto, Jupiter sextile Neptune, and Jupiter conjunct Pluto to follow throughout 2007, moving back and forth, direct and retrograde in their orbits, stretching their influence all year long.
For 2008, we will have Jupiter trine Saturn, Jupiter sextile Uranus, and Saturn opposing Uranus, back and forth as always, but without the Neptunian fog and Plutonian edge to create by destruction. There is opportunity to move forward in positive, well-planned steps, yet any change on a personal or world level only gives way after some fear and unwillingness to let go.
If these planets aspect any of your natal planets, progressed planets, or relationship planets (which they most likely do), the opportunities and challenges are put directly into your hands, too. A little awareness and planning help us 'go with the flow' rather than 'against the tide'.
While thinking about Benazir Bhutto, I once again thought of the over-simplistic attitude directed toward astrologers in the question of, "Well, if you could tell that this tendency was there, why couldn't you have done something to stop it?" It seems a reasonable thing to wonder about, at first. Let's say you were one of those having a precognitive dream of someone's death. Who would you call? What kind of reaction would you expect? If you used astrology, too, you'd face fear, ridicule, and jokes from about half the public. Someone might even suspect you were involved somehow if you had prior knowledge of it. (Yes, I've been watching the Twilight Zone marathon, and it's pretty obvious in my own thinking right now, isn't it?)
I have been going over the coming year's celestial plans and I must say that the last week in January and early November carry a chance for some unsettling events. Eclipses will occur February 7 and 21, August 1 and 16. Eclipses are often involved in noteworthy events and times. The Democratic Convention will be held the week of August 24 and the GOP Convention will be held the first week in September. Times of New and Full Moons are eventful, too.
Please note that I have used some of my own intuitive 'guidance' as well as astrological principles to arrive at the above conclusions. There is much more to take into consideration and one can get as detailed as time permits to arrive at more particular information. I don't even use the thoughts of 'good' or 'bad' when I work with astrology. It goes way beyond good or bad. Something may appear positive at first, then end up being a very destructive force in one's life. Or one can go through a difficult, stressful period which will ultimately contribute such a great deal of wisdom and experience, that it will be seen as very helpful and positive in the future. I try very hard to avoid those words as well as the word luck or lucky. It's just not that simple. At least it isn't in my own life.
Consider this: I've spent some time looking at charts and the times and causes of one's death. The 8th house represents the manifestation of endings or death in one's world and the planet Pluto is associated with death, among other things. The planet Jupiter, a very beneficial planet, is often in a strong place in a chart dealing with death. What might this suggest? Perhaps death, or the end of our physical existence on Earth in this lifetime, is an accomplishment. We've 'graduated' from our lessons and it's time for spiritual reflection. Upon physical death, we are free from suffering from physical sickness or injuries bringing constant disabling pain. Jupiter is associated with spirituality - we return to Spirit, temporarily or eternally. Can people loosen up their fear and compulsion for control long enough to consider these possibilities?
If anyone would like a wallet calendar card dealing with Mercury's retrograde times this year and how to best use them to your advantage, email or contact me. I had some made up through American Federation of Astrologers in Tempe, Arizona. The cards can be very helpful. If you're looking for some serious stimulation and challenges, you can use it to help you with that, too. ;-)
Blessings of Light and Love in 2008!

A study in lines and color.

I couldn't resist trying to photograph some Christmas lights, especially because the Full Cancer Moon was just rising!

Little whispy mists did their magic on Luna. Luna is at her best in her own sign of Cancer. It is a Full Moon when the 2 Lights are 180 degrees apart from each other; we on Earth are in the middle of the two. Isn't it interesting that the size of each body appears almost exactly the same to us on Earth? During an exact eclipse it is especially notable.
I wish you all a Happy Christmas Eve (it is only 7:45 pm in California and I'm waiting for a Beatles Christmas on the local radio station) and have a peaceful, or at least fun, Christmas!

Another major celestial event was the recent Jupiter-Pluto conjunction in Sagittarius which happened before Jupiter left for Capricorn.
Stories which touch on the above Ju/Pl/Sag./Cap. themes have been all around. The recent ban on the death penalty by the state of New Jersey brings those themes together in the interest of justice and in a lasting way.
On a local note, and a sad one, yesterday morning a couple in their 40/50s were in the path of a trash collection truck. The truck hit the woman and she was pushed aside, but the man was run over by the truck and died. That has a decidedly Plutonian ring to it. Refuse, rot, violence, coercion, and endings are all under the domain of the 'Ruler of the Underworld', Pluto or Hades.
Another one is the uproar in New Orleans! People are protesting (Pluto-the masses) the city's (government-Saturn) plan to demolish a public housing site. This is exposing the subjects of race, government, and political power, to boot.
There seem to be many of these. The planetary changes and alignments taking place are heavy-duty ones and it's interesting to see how the traditional energies assigned to planets centuries ago manifest on the scene in 2007. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

As Jupiter, Pluto, the Sun, and Mercury move on into Capricorn, Saturn (Capricorn's ruling planet) turns retrograde. I've been wondering how this would manifest itself on the world stage.
Yesterday on NPR, there were several stories of Iraqi residents taking action against Blackwater for their extreme violence and heavy-handedness while in the country. Today, I see a story on what amounts to slave labor in Florida's food/fruit industry. Burger King (corporation) has resisted raising tomato pickers' wages, too.
Each zodiac sign has a planet that relates to the particular type of energy represented by that sign. Saturn is associated with, or rules, crystallization, hardship, hard work, stability, foundations, governments and bureaucracies (which support society), and extremes in authoritarian attitudes.
I am reading Joe Conason's book, "It Can Happen Here", which describes how America has been coerced into the neo-cons authoritarian rule with the Bush-Cheney administration. The plans were drawn up years before, while the neo-cons were under the spell of Leo Strauss. Mr. Strauss left Germany as Hitler began to transform the country to authoritarian/fascist rule. Strauss did not like the Nazis or Hitler, but he believed authoritarian rule was what America needed to become the world's superpower or Pax Americana. That translates to endless war, an unaware populace, an end to rights, and, basically, what we see Bush and Cheney trying to force upon us. The neo-cons tend to see America taking a 'fated' role in the world. These people also support the current GOP candidates.
I was reading a part of the book about Michael Ledeen, an old-time neo-con, and how he is 'fascinated' with the idea of "creative destruction". My curiosity got the better of me so I went to the computer to investigate. Ledeen has the Sun and Pluto conjunct (right next to each other) in Leo. Sun is creativity and Pluto covers destruction. Quite a signature. Most dictators and heavy-handed authority figures have a Saturn-Pluto marker in their chart connected with the Sun, the Midheaven or Ascendant. Saturn's slow, steady hand also demands justice and fairness. We will see this administration scurry in an attempt to remain unscathed by the demands of justice.
So as our attention has been on getting ready to enjoy the holiday, the script above us is drawing us into a plot about authoritarian rule, unfair labor, corporate rule, fundamentalist rule, diminishing human rights, and extremes in lack and cruelty.
This should get interesting and, hopefully, with some light shining in the dark corners, we'll be able to take back America. Discussion of exactly what the founders had in mind would be very healthy about now.
